Remineralizing Toothpaste

Let’s make some remineralizing toothpaste. I personally like to make a big batch so feel free to up or down scale this formulation

This formulation does include some Xylitol, which is technically a naturally occurring sugar alcohol. While it is generally used as a low calorie sugar substitute it might be effective in preventing cavities in the first place. Check out this article from the National Library of Medicine: Meta-analysis on the Effectiveness of Xylitol in Caries Prevention. Caries is another word for tooth decay

Xylitol is toxic to animals so do keep that in mind. However many of the common ingredients we use like Alliums (garlic, onion, chives, leaks), Oregano, & Mint are also toxic to animals & since we don’t seem to mind keeping those in the house I feel fine keeping Xylitol on hand.

DO NOT USE BENTONITE CLAY IN YOUR FORMULATION. Bentonite clay may contain heavy metals which can easily be absorbed into the body through the gums.

You can flavor your toothpaste using essential oils which can support oral health or you can leave it unflavored. You will need to look up the dilution rate for your chosen essential oil.

Equipment:

  • Mixing Bowl

  • Measuring cups & spoons

  • Whisk

  • Spatula

  • Piping bag or Ziplock bag

  • Squeeze tube or storage container

  • Digital Scale

Ingredients:

2/3 cup Calcium carbonate, Calcium hydroxyapatite or Tricalcium phosphate

4 TBSP Baking Soda

3 TBSP Xylitol

2 TBSP Diatomaceous Earth, food grade

2 tsp Activated Charcoal

MCT Oil, see notes

Essential Oil

Instructions:

  1. If you are using essential oils be sure to weigh your mixing bowl before you add your ingredients. Write this number down somewhere safe

  2. Add your dry ingredients to the mixing bowl & mix until well combined

  3. Add the MCT oil a little at a time until the mixture is a paste. The amount used will depend on the storage container you choose

  4. Once the desired consistency has been reached weigh the mixture if you are using essential oils

  5. Add 0.5-1% by weight of your essential oil

  6. Mix until thoroughly combined

  7. Place the tooth paste in a large piping or Ziplock bag, if you are putting it in a tube. Gently fill the tube with the tooth paste

Notes:

  • You could use coconut oil instead of MCT oil, but keep in mind that coconut oil since coconut oil is solid at room temperature the consistency can change depending on the temperature of your room. Also coconut oil can build up in your pipes so that’s something else to keep in mind. Using MCT oil can give you the benefits of coconut oil for oral health without any additional issues
