Hibiscus Limeade
Ingredients:
½ gallon Water
1 cup dried Hibiscus flowers (Hibiscus sabdariffa)
¾ - 1 cup Cane Sugar OR Coconut Sugar
½ cup Lime juice
½ - 1 tsp high quality Mineral Salt, optional see notes
Ice cubes
Lime Wedges, to garnish
Instructions:
1) In a small saucepan add 2 cups of water & the hibiscus flowers. Give it a good stir
2) Bring the water to a boil
3) Reduce heat, add a lid & simmer for 20 minutes
4) Using a fine mesh strainer over your pitcher or ½ gallon mason jar carefully strain the flowers from the tea. Press the flowers with the back of your spoon to get out all the liquid. You will end up with less liquid than you started with
5) Add the sugar & salt if using stirring until they are dissolved
6) Add the lime juice & stir well
7) Add ice cubes & remaining cold water
8) Serve with a lime wedge over ice
Notes:
if you are following AIP be sure to use coconut sugar. It does give a slightly caramel aftertaste compared to cane sugar
the addition of a small portion of mineral salt may provide you with trace minerals that may help replenish any lost electrolytes. If you didn’t want to add the salt but still wanted the additional electrolytes you can use trace mineral drops instead. I personally like the brand Aussie Trace Minerals which can be found on Amazon
I like to order my herbs from www.Alpineherb.ca as they have a wonderful selection of herbs, teas & spices. I have no affiliation with that company, I’m just a consumer
Don’t forget to garnish with lots of ice cubes & a few lime wedges!
