Citronella Candle

Use a single wax or a blend of waxes for this candle. You could even melt down old candles & repurpose them.

A quick internet search for candle calculator to figure out how much wax you will need based on the container you are using.

An old candle container is a great thing to repurpose. Get creative with your container. An clean tin can can work in a pinch

Equipment:

  • Melting pot, pouring pitcher or large stainless steel bowl

  • Pot

  • Stove

  • Digital scale

  • Thermometer

  • Stirring instrument

  • Container or tin

  • Wick with tabs & sticks

Ingredients:

1 lb. Wax

1 oz Citronella, Cymbopogon nardus essential oil

Instructions:

  1. Put a pot on the stove to boil. This will become the base of our double boiler

  2. Weigh the wax & place it into the melting pot, pouring pitcher or bowl, placing it over top of the double boiler base. Be careful not to allow any water to get into the wax

  3. Stir the wax as it melts

  4. Allow the wax to come up to 185F

  5. Remove from the heat

  6. Add the Citronella essential oil, stirring for 2 minutes

  7. Allow the wax to cool down to 135F

  8. Prepare your container by placing the wick tab on the bottom of a wick. Press the wick down firmly where you want it to be. Place as many wicks in your container as is needed. There should be wooden sticks with a hole in the center that comes with most kits, place the stick on the wick & thread the wick through the hole. If your kit doesn’t come with the stick you will need to tie a piece of string around the wick & attach that to something that will allow the wick to stand straight

  9. Once the wax has cooled down carefully pour it into the container

  10. When the candle is “set” remove the sticks. Trim the wick down to 1/4”

  11. Allow the candle to cure for 3-5 days before you use it

Notes:

  • When you use your candle for the first time allow be sure to allow the entire top layer of the wax to melt all the way to the edges to help prevent tunneling

  • Burn your candle for 3-4 hours at a time being sure to allow the entire top layer to melt
